Bhubaneswar: Leading Odissi dancer and choreographer Sujata Mohapatra has been selected for prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for the year 2017.

It was decided by the General Council of the Akademi in a meeting, which was held in Imphal, Manipur on June 8.

Sujata Mohapatra is the disciple and daughter-in-law of legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Her family is dedicated to the field of Odissi dance, as her husband Ratikant Mohapatra and daughter Preetisha Mohapatra have also brought laurels in the field of the classical dance.

Sujata Mohapatra, born on June 27, 1968, is famous for her mesmerising performance and beautiful expression.

She is actively involved in teaching Odissi in ‘Srjan’ (Odissi Nrityabasa), a prime Odissi Dance Institution founded by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.

Sujata will receive the award from the President of India Ramnath Kovind at a function in New Delhi.

She is among the 42 artistes, who will get the award in different fields. They include 12 artistes from the field of music, nine each from dance and theatre, and 10 from traditional, folk, tribal music, dance and puppetry fields.
